Homework #1 (Due August 20, 2009)

Personal Study Methods and Learning Goals

1.            It’s time to write yourself a letter. Yes, you are going to write a letter to you, only 3 years older and wiser.  In this letter, you should address the following elements of the present:

·         Course Objectives and Learning Methods

Carefully read over the learning objectives for this course, as provided on the syllabus.  Think about the learning process you are undergoing to become an engineer:

a.        How do you think this course should contribute to that process?

b.       What do you want to get from this course? 

c.        What do you need to get from this course?

d.       After thinking about these questions and course objectives, write a set of personal learning goals for the semester.  Some of these may be more general than the course objectives while others may be more specific, e.g.

                "I need to improve my problem-solving skills."              (general)

                "I need to find a quiet place to study this semester."   (specific)

·         Professional Goals

Now think more broadly about your long-term goals. At the present time, you may not have clearly identified long-term goals; this is not unusual.  If this is the case, say so and cite options you are considering or want to consider. Your list of goals should be based on your current perceptions.  Your goals may change during the term (or during your course of study!).

a.        Why are you pursuing a chemical engineering degree at UK?  What do you intend to do after graduation?

b.       How do you expect UK to help prepare you to achieve your long-term goals?

c.        How do you expect UK to help you identify your goals?

Questions for consideration on academic misconduct policy

  1. Why would you think it is important for faculty to enforce the Code of Student Conduct.  List some benefits that you as a student receive when this is enforced.
  2. List some of the potential negative consequences for academic dishonest behavior, including your academic standing; relationships with faculty, peers, family, and potential employers; and your own self image.
  3. Give an example of a public figure who made a faulty decision that resulted in a loss of position or status.  How can one poor decision have significant consequences?
  4. There are many factors that contribute to circumstances that encourage academically dishonest behaviors including poor time management, lack of preparation, inappropriate ranking of priorities, and lack of general personal care (including getting enough rest, exercising, and eating well), among others.   List some of things that you do to prevent circumstances that might encourage academic dishonesty.
  5. After completing this assignment, do you have a good understanding of the academic integrity expectations for this course and in this department?  List any lingering issues about which you’re unsure or want clarification.

P1 A mixture of hydrocarbons contains (by moles) 1/5 methane, 2/5 ethane, and 2/5 propane. Find the composition of the mixture expressed as mass fractions.

Set up as many as you can find time for. The numerical value of the solution is not the tough part (though it is necessary!). Getting the flowchart, DOF=0, and determining a strategy for solving the system in place are key.
